Staying ahead of Microsoft itself, VMware has updated its Workstation desktop computer hypervisor so it can run Microsoft's soon-to-be-released Windows 8.
VMware Workstation 9, available now, also includes the ability for users to access their desktops, by phones or tablets, through a browser. The software has also been tailored to work with computers running Intel's new Ivy Bridge processors.

Workstation is VMware's virtualization software for desktop computers. It allows users to run multiple OSes, such as Windows and Linux, on the same computer.
The new version, the first major upgrade since last September, can support Windows 8 in a number of ways. The software can recognize multitouch screen gestures, which Windows 8 was built to accommodate. Workstation's Unity, which allows users to run applications in a virtual machine without actually running the virtual machine itself, can handle Windows 8 applications. The software recognizes the USB 3.0 standard, also supported in Windows 8. On the Linux side, this version will be the first to run Linux's OpenGL 2.1 graphics library.
The software also features new capability to access virtual machines from tablets and smartphones, through the use of a browser, without the use of either Adobe Flash or browser plug-ins.
Workstation also comes with some new tools for the administrator as well. Administrators can set up a virtual machine so users cannot copy files between the virtual and physical desktops.

I apologize if this has been answered or if it's posted in the wrong placed but I'm just not finding my answer.
I will make this as simple as possible to get a quick answer.
This is what I have:
-Dedicated server running Windows Server 2008
-Virtualized Windows 7 beta
-ATI HDTV Wonder that needs to be replaced
-Xbox 360 connected to Windows 7 Media Center
This is what I want to do:
-Install a new tuner (usb, pci, pci-e, whatever works) into my server
-Be able to use that tuner on the virtualized Windows 7
-Thus getting it all out to my Xbox 360
Is this possible? Everything I have attempted and read says it's pretty much not possible since you can't use a tv tuner in a virtual machine. There may be a slight possibility of getting it to work with a USB tuner.
I just want to avoid having to build a whole 'nother computer just to get DVR capabilities out to my Xbox 360 so naturally I want to virtualize.

HDHomeRun is probably your best bet; it's a network based tuner.

If you want to passthrough a a PCI/PCI-E device to a Windows guest, your motherboard needs to support the Intel VT-d extension AND your virtualization software need to support VT-d. I'm not sure, but I think Parallels may support VT-d. Otherwise, the HDHomeRun is definitely something to look at.

I'm interested in this, too. I have an HDHomeRun which works great under virtualized environments. Alas, there's no equivalent analog tuner for it.
Would the following support Intel VT-d?
Supermicro X7SBE (Intel 3210 chipset)

The chipset has to support VT-d but ALSO the mobo vendor has to give you the option in the bios. There's quite a handful of Intel chipsets that have VT-d support but alot of vendors that do not support VT-d in their implementation. Check the list here in the link below, however it may be outdated:

I already read it but the article is very limited and seems to concentrate only on desktop chipsets. Google searching for VT-d doesn't really net a lot of practical results.
The Intel 3210 is a server/workstation chipset and Supermicro seems to be primarily in the server market. I'm off to read the motherboard manual to see if I can find anything pertaining to VT-d.
Still can't find a definitive yes or no article regarding Hyper-V and VT-d.

Pretty sure Hyper-V doesn't support it. When I researched this in the past it didn't. Xen was the only virtualization suite that supported it (other than enterprise level ones) and Parallels had a beta that only supported a Windows host for VT-d.

That sounds like a great solution. However, I am on cable and have a lot of analog channels I still want access to. And if I'm reading the specs correctly, I will have to forfeit those. Or am I wrong?

Okay, thanks. Read some discussions dating back to 2007 and was hoping there might have been some improvement in this area. I'm fine with the Windows host requirement. I don't think my fake-RAID card is supported all that well in Linux so I actually need a Windows host (hence, no Xen). The Parallels server beta has VT-d support, I think, and is available to the public. I believe the latest Parallels workstation beta also has VT-d support but so far, I can't find a download link to it.

I used to pass a Hauppauge USB analog TV tuner to a VM with MCE2005 and it worked fine. I've never tried a digital SD/HD/QAM/ATSC tuner, so I can't say for sure that it'll work, but it should. I am running VMWare Workstation 6.0 and it passes USB peripherals pretty well.
I even pass an ipod to another VM running Itunes.

Right, but that will only get me a few local HD channels, correct? What about channels 2-75 on cable? I was under the impression that I would still need an NTSC tuner for those. OTA is not an option for me as the city I live in has very very poor signal strength.

As far as I know, VMWare Server 2 (free!) has USB pass-thru, Intel Parallels has it and maybe VMWare ESXi, not sure on that one. VirtualPC I don't know.
Edit: ESXi doesn't do any USB/PCI pass-through either..
So forget about any bare-metal solution that supports USB pass-through.. for now. You could use VMWare Server 2 though, as it installs on top of any OS and has USB support..

So this seems to be the current state Im in:
A) Purchase a USB tuner and use VMWare to passthrough USB to Windows 7
B) ????
Things that won't work:
1) Installing Media Center directly onto Server 2008. That would be perfect but sounds like its never going to happen or will be incredibly difficult and buggy.
2) Using Hyper-V or VirtualPC as they do not support USB devices
3) Using a PCI/PCI-E based tuner as virtualization support is extremely limited if at all
4) HDHomeRun would be perfect if it supported analog cable!
Does all that sound right? Please suggest alternatives or let me know if I made an error in my summary

I can also say that USB passthrough is there in VMware. You can also specify the virtualized OS to take USB focus on startup for consistent USB mappings (through the config file, I think it was).

You could buy a UBox (http://www.lantronix.com/device-netw..vers/ubox.html) that would enable you to use that USB tuner over Ethernet. Kinda like HDHomeRun, if I'm not mistaken. I never tried it personally, but it could be a viable solution..

Do you know of any reviews regarding this? Just wondering how it compares to a similar Belkin offering. The Belkin had numerous complaints, hence, even though I was considering it, I scrapped the idea.

ESXi however is a totally different story.

should note that I have not been using USB with a TV tuner.. I also use VMWare Workstation because I like it more, but I have vista on my laptop.. The USB bluetooth dongle I have is NOT compatible with vista but at times I need it to create a DUN / Cell Phone as Modem network connection. Works with Win XP so I just VM XP and plug in the USB dongle to get internet.
Worked out of the box for me.
I haven’t done extensive testing with Virtual PC but from my understanding it mapped USB the same way as Workstation. But have used USB flash drives with no issues; which is why I assumed it would work.
Let me know if there is something im missing…

Well, I heard about that software from someone that was using it to pass a DVB-S USB adapter over the network and he said it worked fine.

Can you just double-check if USB flash drives work with VirtualPC 2007? Because try as I might, I just can't find an option for it. I know USB works in VPC for Mac but so far, I haven't found any indication that it'll work in the Windows version. I've only tried the free VMWare player and free VirtualPC 2007. I prefer VPC 2007 since it handles video much better.
So VPC 2007 isn't mentioned but it seems the knowledge base article still applies:

Wow! That looks like a fantastic solution. Thank you for the link. Looks like it supports 32/64 bit verisons of just about every form of Windows too which is a big plus. And it's even coming to Windows Mobile? That will be pretty cool.
I will have to figure out if anyone has experience using it with a tuner to see how well that works. Especially to see how well it would handle two tuners at a time.
